Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament (TIGFT)
Annual Tobago International Game Fishing Tournement (TIGFT) is relocated from Pigeon Point to the north end of Tobago in the wonderfully friendly village of Charlotteville, north eastern tip of Tobago and 3 miles from some of the best big game fishing grounds around Tobago. The tournament will be using the live weigh in format for fish that are 125lbs and over; similar to what is done in the famous Boca Grande tournament in the Florida keys. Tournament is held each year in March, this tournament combines three days of fantastic deep sea fishing with the vibrancy, beauty and friendliness of the Caribbean. TIGFT is a qualifying event for the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) / Bonnier International Tournament of Champions and is also a member of the Southern Caribbean Billfish Circuit (SCBC).
The Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament pulls in anglers from near and far; from the Caribbean to North and South America, even as far as Europe, the tournament draws big game fisherman who can appreciate great camaraderie, competition and fishing conditions and just like Marlin Madness, is an extremely sociable event. TIGFT competitors can expect to do battle with Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Dolphin (Dorado/Mahi Mahi) and Wahoo. Last year’s winning catch was a hefty 264lb Grouper and in 2009 it was a 423.70 lb Blue Marlin.
Charters for both deep sea fishing over reefs (also known as bottom fishing) and trolling for gamefish are available. Some of the boats and captains are available for charter during the Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament. The Committee of the TIGFT is committed to Conservation of all marine life and would continue to promote catch and release to all participants.
The TIGFT special feature is its emphasis on CONSERVATION of the island's fisheries through the TAG and RELEASE programme. This is especially important for the livelihood of the fishermen of Charlotteville, the host village. Of the fish brought to scale, some is donated to charities including the Orphanage, Home for the Elderly and others.
For anglers and spectators, the TIGFT is a cultural melting pot where you can find persons of many nationalities and from all walks of life enjoying what is considered a true fun fishing festival. The people of Charlotteville warmly welcome everyone that visits this beautiful bay and their hospitality is unmatched. Though every participant may not walk away with a special prize or trophy, everyone is a winner at the TIGFT. The Fishing, Camaraderie, Food, Festivities, fishing and the sheer beauty of Charlotteville leaves a lasting impact on all participants and visitors to this special event.
