Institute of Marine Affairs
This library and information centre conducts research on the marine environment around the islands. These new premises for the Institute of Marine Affairs consist of four buildings clustered around a small piazza. The research block (shown here) includes 15 labs for marine chemistry, fisheries and aquaculture, and environmental research. The information block includes the library, IT offices, and children’s education facilities.

A depth averaged finite difference model was setup for the study area in order to describe the circulation patterns in the area and to conduct preliminary assessments of the transport of pollutants entering the bay. The studies indicated that Carenage Bay experiences poor flushing by currents when compared to Chaguaramas Bay.
The Institute has also contributed to the development of national legislation on marine pollution, and has addressed a wide range of marine and environmental issues through membership on the following national committees:
- Wetlands
- Land Reclamation
- Maritime delimitation
- Oil spills contingency
- Biodiversity
.

The auditorium includes an exhibition gallery and small bar, and the administrative block houses all operational staff on two floors, flanked by a parade of aquaria. Regular marine life exhibits can be seen, by request.
