Theatre in Trinidad and Tobago has reached a stage where it should be recognised as an institution. Unofficially, there is a theatre season, which runs from after Carnival to early August and then continues from October to December. Most theatre performances take place during these periods. The object is to create a Theatre Month in a traditionally 'off month', i.e. September, to raise awareness of the dramatic arts and the profiles of the people and organisations involved. NDATT aim and objective is to foster and promote an interest in and to develop all aspects of the art of drama in Trinidad and Tobago and elsewhere.
Trinidad theatre has incorporated many forms through the years: from tribal theatre and European/American performance, to tent theatre, street theatre and best village to theatre in education and 'grand hall' theatre.
National Drama Festival’s annual Cacique Awards Ceremony is held to recognise achievement, to applaud the production, to appreciate the practitioner, to award outstanding performance, and not to forget those behind the scene.
Workshop
The Theatre Production Skills Workshop seeks to provide the opportunity for amateur and inexperienced persons in the field to interact with seasoned Theatre arts professionals within a kind of mentoring process. The skills workshop aims to utilise the theatrical production process as a basis for the exchange of ideas and experiences with special emphasis upon Directing, Acting, Lighting and Stage Management. The workshops culminate in a staged Theatrical production and a post-production forum. Symposiums continue to be held annually to seek the opinions of the membership in further refining the awards system.
The Theatre Production Skills Workshop not only provides a much-needed forum for cross-fertilisation of skills and ideas, it becomes a basis for continued communication between theatre practitioners. More importantly, if directors, actors, stage managers and potential lighting designers currently involved in amateur productions and cultural festivals are integrated in professionally managed theatrical productions, these persons acquire the confidence necessary to implement the acquired expertise.
